Thai Vowels

There are 32 vowels in Thai language – 14 long vowels and 18 short vowels.

A vowel in Thai is called สระ [sà-rà]

Long vowels are called สระเสียงยาว [sà-rà sĭang yaao]

Short vowels are called สระเสียงสั้น [sà-rà sĭang sân]

The transliteration identifies long vowels (with the exception of the irregular vowels which add a consonant as in am) as they all have the vowel letter repeated (for example aa ).

The 14 Short vowels consist of :

The irregular vowels are

These vowels are transferred to the ‘Long vowels’ group with the exception of  ฤ.  And the reason they are called ‘Irregular vowels’ is that they have the sounds of consonants blended in as follows:

–ำ= –ะ with ม(m-sound)
ไ– = –ะ with ย(y-sound)
ใ– = –ะ with ย(y-sound)
เ–า = –ะ with ว (w-sound)
ฤๅ = รือ (ร with–ือ)
ฤ = รึ (ร with –ึ )

The main reason to categorise Thai vowels into 2 groups based on sounds; short sound and long sound, is that the vowels also play a major role in tones, pronunciation and grammar. And the two groups of vowels will generate the Thai syllables or Thai words for Dead and Live Syllables.
